Zetech University Benchmarks with Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL)

Daystar University has always had an eLearning platform which was being used by some faculty members. However, the true potential of the Daystar’s eLearning platform was put to test during the outbreak of COVID-19, owing to the need of the University to continue with its core mission which is to offer holistic and transformative education.

It was at the wake of the pandemic that the Directorate of Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) was institutionalized. Since then, the directorate has managed to position itself and earned admiration in Kenya and the region at large.

It is against this backdrop that on February 8, 2022, four representatives of Zetech University visited Daystar University to benchmark with the Directorate of Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL). The team consited of Gladys W. Wagura, Director ODeL, Esther Mwangi, Director Research, Nicholas Kauoi and Shadrack Ngao. Among the areas of intereste were:

  1. The operational nexus between ODeL andother directorates within the University
  2. Data and content security
  3. Online operationalization of Problem-Based Learning(PBL)
  4. Handleing of lessons and management of online exams.

Speaking on behalf of the DVC - Academics, Research and Student Affairs (ARSA), Director of Academic Programmes, Dr. Samuel Muriithi explained how problem-based learning is carried out on eLearning stating that Daystar’s eLearning platform has features that allow students to break into discussion groups after which they make their presentations to the class.

The Director, Quality Assurance, Dr. Sylvia Tuikong who sits in the ODeL board as the Chairperson ensures that all the courses offered online have been accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE). She also conducts surveys to ensure that the quality of education offered online is as good as the one offered in face-face learning. 

Director ODeL, Dr. Carol Ayuya recognized the support of the University management, stating that this has contributed to the success of Daystar Open Distance and eLearning. While the Deputy Director ODeL Dr. Martin Munyao revealed that the University has been using Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (MOODLE) as the primary tool for ODeL, with plans to roll out the use of E360, which is a new platform.

According to Dr. Ayuya, since introduction of the Directorate of Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL), Daystar University has hosted AMREF International University, Esami University, Tanzania, Railway Training Institute and Zetech University for a benchmark on matters eLearning. Daystar University has itself benchmarked with Beulah Heights University, University of Maryland, USA, University of Minnesota, USA, University of Colarodo, USA, Sophia University, Rome.
