Daystar holds a memorial service for the late Branice Odhimbo

Daystar University Students, faculty, staff, family of the late Branice Odhiambo and friends unite at the Amphitheatre, Main Campus, Athi River, during a memorial service to celebrate the life and legacy of a third-year nursing student, Branice Odhiambo.

[Athi River: June 9, 2026] The Daystar University community came together in solemn remembrance and celebration of the life of Branice Odhiambo, a third-year nursing student whose warmth, compassion, and dedication left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Held at the Amphitheatre, Main Campus Athi River, the memorial service brought together university leaders, faculty, staff, students, family, and friends to share memories, honour Branice’s life, and offer support to one another during a time of profound loss.

Throughout the service, speakers reflected on Branice’s character, describing him as joyful, hardworking, and caring person who was deeply committed to serving others. His passion for nursing and his kindness toward patients and colleagues were highlighted as qualities that defined his life and inspired those around him.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban P. Ayiro spoke about the value of relationships, the fragility of life, and the importance of supporting one another. He urged students to seek help whenever they face emotional or personal struggles, emphasizing that asking for support demonstrates strength and courage.

Prof. Ayiro also stressed the need for greater awareness of mental health challenges among young people. He encouraged students to remain attentive to the wellbeing of their peers, reminding them that simple acts of care and concern can make a significant difference.

“A call could save a life,” he said, urging students to intentionally check up on each another and create a culture of support within the university.

The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to student wellbeing, revealing plans to strengthen campus security through the installation of an electric perimeter fence and biometric access systems.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research and Student Affairs (DVC-ARSA), Prof. Samuel Muriithi, reflected on the university’s desire to see every student successfully complete their academic journey. He encouraged students to remain focused on their education, trust in God, and make wise choices that will positively shape their future.

Drawing from the biblical example of Daniel, Prof. Muriithi urged students to remain steadfast in their faith even during difficult circumstances, and to cultivate friendships that add value to their lives.

“You have a bright future. Let God take charge of your life; he will not let you down,” he said.

The Dean of Students Rev. Mutinda Musyimi acknowledged the deep pain experienced by Branice’s family, classmates, and the entire university community. He encouraged students facing emotional challenges to seek assistance through the Daystar Counselling and Career Centre (DC3), university staff, and the Chaplaincy.

The Dean School of Nursing Dr. Susan Njuguna conveyed heartfelt condolences to Branice’s family and friends, noting that his passing has left a significant void within the School of Nursing and the wider Daystar community.

The Associate Dean Ms. Keziah Kahiga reaffirmed the School of Nursing’s commitment to supporting students during difficult moments.  She assured students that faculty members remain available to walk alongside them throughout their academic and personal journeys.

Daystar University Secretary General, Mr. Gareth Oseko, encouraged the university community to remain united and supportive in grief. He remembered Branice as a cheerful and charismatic young man whose positive spirit touched many lives.

Representing fellow students, Mr. Daniel Kira shared personal memories of Branice during their clinical rotations at Machakos Hospital, recalling his diligence, professionalism, and genuine compassion for patients.

As prayers of comfort and hope went up to conclude the memorial service, the Daystar community was reminded that Branice’s legacy extends far beyond the classroom. His life stands as a testament to kindness, service, resilience, and the power of positive impact.

Though deeply missed, Branice Odhiambo’s memory will continue to inspire the Daystar University community, serving as a lasting reminder that true success is measured not only by academic achievement but also by the lives we touch along the way.
