[Athi River Campus: 25th June 2026] From Wednesday 23rd June, business thrived at the PAC Court, Main Campus Athi River, as student entrepreneurs gathered to showcase their businesses during a three-day entrepreneurship expo.
The event, held from 23rd to 25th June was sponsored by Daystar University through the Directorate of Research, Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship (DRICE).
In an interview with the Infospot, Innovation Officer Mr. John Nderitu noted that the Daystar Market Expo provided students with a platform to demonstrate their creativity and entrepreneurial skills, with young entrepreneurs showcasing everything from handmade crafts to innovative services.
“It is inspiring to see students take bold steps to turn their ideas into real businesses,” he said, adding that the expo gave the students space to connect directly with customers from across the university community. Mr. Nderitu further underscored that the expo reflected the entrepreneurial spirit that Daystar University seeks to cultivate in its students.
Mr. Charles Munga, a nursing student who sells coastal snacks and creative stationery, described how he had a lot of free time before starting his business. Despite studying long hours, he took the initiative to start a snack business, suppling his classmates.
“My biggest achievement is being able to start my business from zero to what it is today,” Munga said, further revealing that his dream of financial freedom came true because his business sustains him, and he no longer relies on his parents for upkeep.
Mukai Kioko and Samuel Mwake are also business partners who sell household items and electronics in their shop off-campus. Having started their business in response to price hikes and exploitation off-Campus, today their competitive prices make them stand out. Considering the area is patronised by students, he felt the need to source for goods and sell at comrade-friendly prices.
Ms. Esther Wangui, yet another entrepreneur who sells jewellery, advised students who wanted to start a business not to be afraid of starting a business, adding that she started her business as a shy girl but now has confidence to sell her wares to fellow campus mates.
“You need to have financial discipline and recognise that business money is not personal money,” she advised, further adding, “when setting prices, leave room for bargaining because you you’re dealing with students.”
Different student entrepreneurs shared their challenges among them: lack of capital to buy merchandize and high cost of transportation from suppliers to campus, and rent for business premises. Another challenge is the fact that their target audience is students, most of whom normally have little money to spare.
The student entrepreneurs thanked the University for giving them a platform through the expo to sell their goods, publicize their businesses and for creating an online shop for them. They called on the University to continue supporting their businesses by buying from them.
