Center For Quality Assurance

Daystar University is committed to excellence. As a university we know that excellence neither comes naturally nor is it cheap. We are also cognisant that quality cannot be achieved without involving all stakeholders.

Stakeholders include students, accrediting agencies both locally and internationally, academics and academic institutions, sponsors and parents, employers, and others. The University recognises that attention to quality must be structured and systematic.

This is why the Center for Quality Assurance and Excellence in Teaching and Learning was formed. Among its core activities are to ensure that:

  • Student evaluation is systematic, structured and that it informs improvement of teaching and learning in the University. Student evaluations are done every term.
  • All programs offered at Daystar are accredited with the Commission for University Education (CUE). All programs at Daystar are accredited by the commission. We are the only University in Kenya whose PhD in Communication program is accredited by the CUE
  • Continuous systematic and structured evaluation of programs, internally and externally, followed by implementation of improvement plans based on the evaluation. We work closely with CUE and the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA).
  • Quality staff through development and implementation of core skills training programs for the teaching staff.
  • Regular tracer studies to ensure graduates are equipped with skills, knowledge and attitude relevant for the industry/market place. This is done in collaboration with the Research, Publications and Consultancy department.
  • Employment of benchmarking of programs with quality institutions locally and abroad.
  • Adherence to standards set by professional bodies. All professional courses at Daystar are accredited by the professional bodies eg Nursing by the Nursing Council of Kenya.






















Center's Purpose Statement

The Center for Quality Assurance is mainly concerned with accreditation, evaluation and recognition.

The purpose of the Center is to ensure that the university achieves and maintains high quality educational standards and also exploits available opportunities for improvement

Vision Statement

The Center for Quality Assurance at Daystar University aspires to be a distinguished Christ-centered Center for enhancing excellent quality delivery of educational services to the University’s student community.

Mission Statement

The Center for Quality Assurance at Daystar University exists to work collaboratively with other departments, teaching and non-teaching, to ensure that the university develops quality and internationally recognized effective Christian servant leaders for the transformation of church and society in Africa and the world. 

Broad Objective Of The Center

The broad objective of the Center is to ensure that Daystar becomes a recognized world class Christ centered university that offers quality education. 

Specific Objectives Of The Center

  1. To work with the university administration to ensure that the university has adequate and appropriate physical facilities for the University’s academic programs.
  2. To work with Academic departments in conjunction with the relevant committees, such as the deans’ committee, the senate and the Commission for University Education to ensure that the University’s curriculum is adequate in terms of content and academic resources.
  3. To provide guidance on internationally recognized benchmarks against which the university to assess its teaching/learning materials and equipment
  4. To work with departments and relevant university bodies, such as the research department and HR, to ensure that faculty have the requisite academic qualifications.
  5. To ensure that the university adheres to both internal and external quality assurance mechanisms in reference to assessment and examination of students.
  6. To ensure that everyone in the university is kept aware of Kenya’s educational regulatory mechanisms as provided for in legal frameworks enacted by the government.
  7. To network Daystar University with other universities in Africa and the world and to ensure that Daystar obtains and maintains high international ratings.
  8. To keep daystar abreast with international education guidelines
  9. To ensure satisfactory documentation of work on quality assurance that can be used to reveal both strengths and weakness in the University’s education system. 

Areas Of Activity In Quality Assurance

  1. Keeping up-to-date documentation of records and data related to quality assurance.
  2. Running regular workshops and trainings to ensure teaching staff are equipped with the requisite skills.
  3. Developing and updating a system to continuously evaluate the university’s education system in terms of provision of information to potential students; provision of information to registered students and evaluation of teaching by students.
  4. Providing a forum for self-evaluation by departments within the university and to ensure a follow up on all evaluations.
  5. Establishing, revising and updating routines for evaluating the university’s work on the learning environment and quality assurance of new course provisions.
  6. Regularly carrying out studies to determine the quality of the university’s graduates in the industry/ work place. 


  1. Establish rapport with all departments as partners in the delivery of quality services.
  2. Inviting professionals, local and international, to facilitate in trainings and workshops.
  3. Collect information and data from locally based organizations such as CUE on quality assurance benchmarks and make these available to all departments.
  4. Develop a Quality Assurance handbook to be distributed to all departments.
  5. Collect information and data from international educational quality assurance organizations and avail these to relevant daystar university departments.
  6. Give direction to the university and her constituent parts on quality assurance and accreditation.
  7. Hold regular meetings with departmental heads to brainstorm on improving quality in the respective departments and to discuss current quality assurance trends in various academic disciplines/ educational administrative systems.
  8. Publish annual appraisals of all departments in terms of quality delivery of services
  9. Network with other quality assurance departments in and outside the country for comparison purposes

The Department of Collaboration for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)

The department of Collaboration for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is Daystar University’s faculty development programme. Born of a desire to promote excellence in teaching to facilitate the best in student learning, the Department was officially established by the University Senate in 2001, but actually began operations in September 2002.

The Department co-ordinates the planning of all faculty development programmes and cultivates new avenues for facilitating the professional growth and development of Daystar’s faculty. The department helps to give faculty development a high priority and reconfirm Daystar’s commitment to doing its best for its faculty, and through them, to its students.

The Academic Division Board acts as the Department’s board. An executive committee responsible for developing programmes and policies of the Department consists of representatives from each Daystar University School and others as may be deemed appropriate. 

CETL has six areas of responsibility within the University. All of these areas relate to faculty development.

  1. Orientation of new faculty to the educational philosophy and vision of Daystar University
    The Department conducts orientation workshops for new faculty. During such workshops, new faculty are introduced to the educational philosophy of the University. This includes the integration of faith and learning, teaching students to be critical reflective thinkers, the concept of liberal arts education, and the Christ-Centerd focus of learning at Daystar. The foundational concept of servant leadership is also be inculcated into the lives of these new teachers to facilitate their modelling as well as teaching the idea.
  2. Planning, implementation, and evaluation of faculty development programmes
    In order to help our faculty be all that God intended for them, regularly scheduled faculty development seminars, workshops, and retreats are a central responsibility of the department.
  3. Development, promotion, and co-ordination of further education opportunities for Daystar faculty
    Many Daystar faculty members desire to further their education by earning doctorates or other postgraduate degrees. Doing so not only improves their skills but also greatly enhances the position, standing, and effectiveness of the University as a whole. The department provides resources, aid in the search for institutions and funding, and provides counselling for faculty members interested in knowing their options for further education.
  4. Development, promotion, and co-ordination of faculty exchange programmes with other Christian higher education institutions throughout the world Daystar has many excellent faculty members who would also provide an expanded vision and new perspectives to Christian institutions in the rest of the world. CETL networks with other Christian higher education institutions to develop mutual relationships to allow the exchange of faculty members to enrich the institutions involved.
  5. Development and management of a resource Center for faculty
    The Department is establishing a faculty resource bureau. A growing library of books, journals and other materials will be available for faculty perusal and use. These materials will cater to the academic and professional needs of our faculty. This resource Center also acts as a training facility for small and medium size workshops and seminars.
  6. Publishing a faculty development newsletter
    The department publishes and distributes a newsletter that helps to tie all of the above areas of responsibility together and communicates what is happening to all faculty members.
