On the 12th of March 2024, the School of Communication hosted a thought-provoking Public Lecture on Artificial Intelligence and Education.  The lecture which was held at DAC Auditorium, shed light on both the potential benefits and hidden dangers of this rapidly advancing technology. The lecture attracted diverse audience from various institutions including Riara University, St. Paul’s University, Maasai Mara University and Daystar University students and faculty.

On the 12th of March 2024, the School of Communication hosted a thought-provoking Public Lecture on Artificial Intelligence and Education.  The lecture which was held at DAC Auditorium, shed light on both the potential benefits and hidden dangers of this rapidly advancing technology. The lecture attracted diverse audience from various institutions including Riara University, St. Paul’s University, Maasai Mara University and Daystar University students and faculty.

The event kicked off with opening remarks by the MC, Dr. Leah Komen, who warmly welcomed the attendees and highlighted the importance of exploring the impact of AI in education. Following this, Rev. Dr. Perminus Mburu delivered a powerful sermonette, drawing parallels between the challenges faced by Joshua and his people in biblical times and the modern-day complexities associated with AI. He emphasized the significance of seeking guidance and wisdom in navigating the digital era.

The lecture shed light on both the potential benefits and hidden dangers of this rapidly advancing technology. The Public Lecture continued with a welcome address by Prof. Levi Obonyo, the Dean of the School of Communication, who engaged the audience in an interactive session by exploring the meaning of AI in different languages, sparking a lively discussion on the cultural implications of this technology. Prof. Samuel Muriithi, representing DVC ARSA Prof. Faith Nguru, expressed gratitude for the enlightening conversation on AI, acknowledging the complexity of defining this phenomenon.

The highlight of the event was the introduction of the guest speaker, Prof. James Katz, a distinguished expert in Emerging Media from Boston University, USA. Prof. Katz delved into the profound impacts of AI, addressing concerns such as the potential threat to human existence highlighted in a US government publication. He underscored the challenges faced by the education sector due to AI’s influence on student learning and teacher roles, advocating for structural changes in educational content to promote critical thinking and media literacy.

The Public Lecture concluded with a stimulating Q&A session moderated by Dr. Daniel Aswani, followed by insightful remarks from Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro, who highlighted the positive advancements in medical care and treatment facilitated by AI. The event wrapped up with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Dr. Daniel Aswani, expressing gratitude to all participants and stakeholders for their valuable contributions.

In essence, the Public Lecture at Daystar University served as a platform for deep reflection on the evolving landscape of AI and its profound implications for education and society at large. The event not only fostered intellectual conversation but also underscored the importance of embracing innovation while staying grounded in timeless values and principles.
