DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

Introduction

The commerce department offers the Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administrations.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Bachelor of Commerce

The Bachelor of Commerce degree is a broad-based globally oriented programme designed to provide the student with sound knowledge of management disciplines for effective decision making in a rapidly changing global business environment. The Bachelor of Commerce is practical and applied. The knowledge, skills and challenges offered by the Bachelor of Commerce degree will broaden the students perspective and prepare them for a management career and to work anywhere in the world. Those who join this programme major in the following areas: Purchasing & Business Logistics, Management Information Systems (MIS), Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting and Business Law.

 

1. Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting

The purpose of the accounting major is to prepare persons who are serving or intend to serve as accountants in public and private sector organizations. The programme is designed to produce dependable, reliable, dedicated and efficient executives and entrepreneurs, capable of performing accounting duties with undoubted honesty.

Requirements for Graduation.

To graduate a student must complete a total of 132 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 57 hours or core commerce courses, 39 hours of accounting courses and 6 hours of electives.

 

2. Bachelor of Commerce in Business Administration & Management

This programme aims at preparing students to become business administrators and managers in public and private organizations. It gives student the foundation they need for a career in business and management. The programme is designed to produce dependable, reliable, dedicated and efficient executives and entrepreneurs, capable of performing administrative duties with undoubted honesty.

Requirements for Graduation.

To graduate a student must complete a total of 133 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 57 hours or core commerce courses, 34 hours of Business Administration courses and 12 hours of electives.

 

3. Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing.

The marketing major is a broad-based globally oriented programme which is intended to provide managerial orientation to marketing in a complex, rapidly changing global environment. The programme is designed to develop well rounded marketing executives with a sound working knowledge of activities involved in developing marketing programmes and strategy to achieve competitive advantages both locally and globally.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate a student must complete a total of 133 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 57 hours or core commerce courses, 37 hours of marketing courses and 9 hours of electives.

 

4. Bachelor of Commerce in Management Information Systems (MIS)

The current business environment requires professional that are able to handle information for proper use and dissemination to the users. The MIS major is a broad-based programme designed to prepare professionals who are able to handle information ethically and disseminate it properly.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate a student must complete a total of 132 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 35 hours of Applied Computer Science, 39 hours of core commerce courses, 28 hours of MIS of courses and 9 hours of electives.

 

5. Bachelor of Commerce in Purchasing and Business Logistics

The Purchasing and Business logistics Major is a broad-based programme of study aimed at developing servant leaders and managers who are well trained and skilled in all aspects of creating value for customers and the firm by management of purchasing and logistics function.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate a student must complete a total of 135 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 57 hours of core commerce courses, 42 hours of purchasing and business logistics courses and 6 hours of electives.

 

6. Bachelor of Commerce in Law

The Bachelor of Commerce in Law uniquely combines the fields of management and law and therefore providing the student with the opportunity for critical and theoretical study. The program seeks to develop competent well-trained and morally upright businessmen and women who will serve as managers in various organizations with unique ability to interpret legal issues.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate a student must complete a total of 147 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 57 hours of core commerce courses, 54 hours of required law courses and 6 hours of law electives.

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

1. Bachelor of Science In Economics

The Bachelor of Science in Economics degree is a broad-based globally oriented programme designed to provide the student with sound knowledge of economic disciplines and adequate tools for the understanding of economic variables, necessary for effective decision making in a rapidly changing global economic environment.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate a student must complete a total of 129 hours: 30 hours of general courses, 87 required courses in economics, 6 hours of economics electives and 6 hours general electives.

 

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

1. Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The programme aims at giving participants adequate business knowledge to enable them play effective roles in their work responsibilities whether in private, public or Christian organizations. The integration of the Christian vision within the courses offered, participation in societal activities, class instruction, discussions and projects will develop in students a Christian world view promoting commitment and servanthood. Majors: MBA Marketing, MBA Finance, MBA Strategic Management, MBA Human Resource.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate a student must complete 58 (or 60 if a student takes a thesis instead of a project) credit hours and obtain a GPA of 3.00 (grade “B” average) in all subjects’ studied. A student who fails in a required course cannot graduate unless the course is repeated and passed. He/she will be allowed to repeat the course only once.

 

2. Master of Science in Economics (MSc Economics)

Rationale

The Master of Science in Economics is designed to develop economists armed with the tools for economic analysis, management and planning. The program is broad based, internationally oriented, and aims at providing advanced skills in economic analysis and planning including practical exposure to the application of those skills in a contextualized perspective. Candidates for the program are expected to appreciate that Daystar University is an institution where Christian faith is integrated into the learning process.

The program is tailored for candidates who may already be serving in various capacities in economic management, analysis and planning. The program will also benefit students completing first degrees and intending to take careers in private, public and other organizations in the areas of economic analysis and planning as well as in the financial sector.

The program aims at giving participants adequate economic knowledge and analytical skills to enable them to play effective roles in their work responsibilities whether in private, public or Christian organizations. It is designed to produce well-rounded dedicated economists, knowledgeable in their fields of work, loyal, devoted and dependable with moral responsibilities to the communities and organizations they serve.

The Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program the learner will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of economic management in the ever changing economic environment;
  2. identify emerging economic issues and new;
  3. developments in the field of economics;
  4. demonstrate understanding of economic interdependence between various countries in the world today;
  5. discuss the dynamics of the realities of global economic problems and explain their impact on organizations;
  6. perform data analysis, interpretation and projections;
  7. demonstrate creativity and innovativeness as managers in both local and international business scene;
  8. integrate Christian values and ethics in economic analysis, planning and management.

Course Duration & Requirements for Graduation

It is anticipated that the MSc in Economics will run for two-years. In the first year, students will be expected to do their course work. In the final year, students will be expected to complete their course work, combined with thesis writing.

Students not on full time mode of study time may take five years, with the possibility of extending the time to seven years.

In order to meet the requirements for graduation the student is required to take a total of 51 credit hours (including thesis), which comprise 45 credit hours dedicated to core courses and the remaining 6 credit hours dedicated to elective courses.

The Design of the Programme

The MSc Economics program compares very well with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) MA program offered at various universities in Africa. AERC has been instrumental in promoting the study of economics at the post-graduate level in Africa.

The MSc Economics program at Daystar in addition to the fundamental economics courses has introduced some crucial courses in management and biblical foundation, courses considered relevant in developing servant leadership. The MSc program is therefore unique in that, besides the requisite economics courses, it incorporates courses relevant in character formation.
