Welcome to the University's Sports and Recreation Section

The mission of the Office of Recreation and Sport at Daystar University is to encourage active healthy lifestyles, foster leadership development, instill an appreciation for diversity, and enhance self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. The Department achieves this by providing safe, purposeful and enjoyable programs and facilities with emphasis on students and the University community. We therefore seek to provide safe recreational programs and facilities which enhance the total educational experience and quality of life for the University community. The immediate clientele is the University student without whom the program would be non-existent.

So said Mahatma Gandhi,

“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work - he is the purpose of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to serve him”

As we provide services and seek to benchmark quality provisions of these, positive changes are inevitable. Change can only happen when we recognize the need for it, which forces us to grow the program by offering new and diverse opportunities.

The Office of Sport and Recreation, Daystar University was set up in the year 1993 to meet this need. Daystar University Sports Committee has been established to guide, frame policy and co-ordinate the sports activities. In order to encourage sports activities of the students and staff on both Athi River and Nairobi Campuses, the Office has divided activities according to the strength of students, whether competitive or recreational. To this end, the Office provides facilitation in soccer, field hockey, rugby, basketball, volleyball, handball, and netball. The Office also provides opportunities for participants to exercise through playing badminton, tennis, table-tennis, karate, chess, scrabble, pool, darts, and swimming. These sports disciplines are usually competed for in the Kenya University Sports Association leagues and tournaments.

The Office of Sport and Recreation will eventually be located in the University’s Swimming Pool complex. This complex will have a magnificent air conditioned gymnasium hall for in-door games with international standard facilities and equipment for badminton, table-tennis, kabaddi, weight lifting, judo, karate, taekwondo and wrestling. A separate fitness center for men and women and a well-equipped physiotherapy laboratory will also be established in the gymnasium hall. A swimming pool of international dimension will be available in the Athi River Campus which will be used for the swimming competitions held in the region.

The Office will have its own sports hostel to accommodate the sports persons who will come to participate in the inter-college or inter-university competitions.
