The only academic program on offer in the Daystar University School of Law (DUSOL) is the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) program.
DUSOL is at a nascent stage of growth. It started off with two Departments Private Law and Public Law, which are at nascent stages of organisation and development.
The feedback from stakeholders so far has been positive and informal in nature. DUSOL Curriculum is due for review this year in 2023, having graduated the first Bachelors of Laws programme in 2022.
As part of the review a Market Survey will be carried out that will give a clearer and formal picture on whether the expectations of stakeholders are being met.
The learning outcomes of courses offered under both the Departments of Private Law and Public Law are clearly formulated, coherent and up-todate. (Attached are samples of course-outlines that are currently in use).
The Department is aware of the compliance and regulatory measures in place by law, and university regulations in terms quality assurance. All courses under the Department of Private Law are compliant. This clarity of government requirements was evidenced by accreditation by the statutory bodies.
Academic discipline and Philosophy
The Department teaches and examines students through incorporates Problem-based learning and Blooms Taxonomy. All the assignments submitted to the department comply with the OSCOLA citation method. The University has invested in Turnitin, an anti-plagiarism software that enables the department to detect plagiarism.
The theoretical knowledge of the learners is reinforced by the legal internships which are namely: LLB 211: Legal practicum, LLB 311: Judicial attachment and LLB 421: international internship,
The Department interviews prospective students to determine their suitability and qualifications to undertake the course. The department maintains an open-door policy where parents and students consult on any issue of concern. Issues raised are dealt with by relevant persons and offices within the University depending on where the issue lies such as the School Board and the Disciplinary Committee. Among the ways of appreciating the needs and requirements of students is by conducting lecturer evaluations, holding student assemblies, Meetings with class representatives and by also conducting curriculum review after every 5-year cycle.
The market survey was carried out in 2018. This survey enabled the University to focus on its niche area media and communications law. Another market is due, to inform the next curriculum and to establish the impact of our graduates and relevance of the courses on offer compared to the labour market and the society. their responsiveness to the needs of the labour market and society. Interactions with industry players during the various kinds of internship/externship is also a means of appreciating some of the key stakeholders.
The Markey Survey covers a wide pool of stakeholders including Legal Practice firms, non-governmental organizations. Judiciary, Civil Society, Listed and non-listed companies to name a few and aims to ascertain the needs of society, and whether those needs are mirrored in the programs on offer under the Department of Private Law.
The department through the legal awareness week also appreciate the needs of society in relation in view of the various legal issues arising/confronting members of society in the disputes presented/shared.
The department prioritizes the market need in crafting its programs while treating the views of all stakeholders equally. The views of all stakeholders are thus considered though some may be prioritized over others depending on the market need as pointed out in the market survey.
A minimum mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE or it's equivalent with a minimum grade of B (Plain) in English or Kiswahili or minimum of Credit Pass or a degree in any other field from an accredited institution; OR any other qualification considered by the Kenya National Qualification Authority or the Council of Legal Education to be equivalent to any of the above. In addition, Applicants will be required to pass an entrance examination administered by the Daystar University School of Law.
