On Thursday 10th August, 2023, Senior Lead Presenter with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), and current MA student at Daystar University, Mr. Waihiga Mwaura, along with BBC Digital Producer and Photojournalist, Mr. Jason Mwangi who is also a Daystar alumnus spent the day at Daystar University Nairobi Campus sharing their experiences with communication students.  They were invited by Mr. Nelson Mapesa, a lecturer in the School of Communication.

The budding journalists listened attentively as Waihiga and Jayson took participants through their career journey from university days to the point where they are today.

Waihiga Mwaura revealed that he studied Computer Science in the university. However, one day as he moved an event in church, his pastor noticed him and said, “You have a voice for the media.”  This triggered his interest in the media and he sought an audition at Citizen Television.

“I was passionate about the issues I was putting across and that is what made me win awards like the Komla Dubar awards. For seven years I did sports news then I started venturing into politics and now I host Africa Uncensored,” he said.

On his part, Jayson advised students that if they wanted to become successful in photojournalism, they must have an attentive eye, know how to frame shot, understand the frame of a subject, and practise lighting.

“A good photojournalist must have an eye to detail and know what he/she wants to get,” he said amidst cheers by the participants.

He narrated how he joined the media as an intern at Royal Media Services for two years before moving to the Standard Media Group and later to Nation Media Group.

“I did my internship for two years without pay because I was eager to learn and I was passionate about Media,” he said.

Students posed questions to Waihiga and Jayson to get a deeper understanding of how the industry is works. The two responded to the satisfaction of those present. Mr. Mapesa thanked the guests for sharing their experiences with the students.

Also present was the Deputy DUSA President Miss Halkano Buke, and Chair, Clubs and Associations Mr. Rhone Otieno.
