DLPDI Equips Teachers with Mental Health intervention skills

Graduands of the Mental Health training show off their certificates after their graduation ceremony- March 25, 2022

On Friday, 25th March 2022, The Daystar Leadership and Professional Development Institute (DLPDI) graduated high school teachers upon completion of a week-long training on Mental Health Intervention Skills for Educators. The training attracted teachers from Pangani Girls High School, Friends School Kamusinga and Moi Girls School-Nairobi. The objective of the training was to equip teachers with skills to detect, assess and intervene in mental health cases among students and youth.

During his speech, the Director of DLPDI, Prof. Abraham Waithima, gave his educational background, citing the struggles he underwent all the way from primary school to his current position today. He noted that with proper nurturing, parents and teachers can help teenagers overcome challenges they face in today’s society.

The programme coordinator Mrs. Jane Irungu encouraged participants to seek mental health counselling for their students from the Daystar University Nuru Counselling Centre at subsidized rates.

Mrs. Kirui from Pangani Girls High School expressed how enriching the course was and said she was looking forward to coming back to the institution to pursue another course.  “Every time you attend a short course at Daystar you feel this is the place to further your studies,” she said.

Mr. Robert Munyasia from Friends School Kamusinga said he and his team members were satisfied with the training. “We appreciate. We’ll be your ambassadors in Bungoma!” he added.

Representing Moi Girls, Nairobi, Mrs. Ruth Aringo said the knowledge imparted was invaluable and felt empowered to counsel their students better. “It has been resourceful, relevant and topics well-chosen,” she said.

Prof. Abraham Waithima presented certificates to the graduands after which they were commissioned with the words of Nehemiah 4:13 -18.
