Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo Laid to rest

[Alego, Siaya: May 16, 2026] The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laban Ayiro led a team from Daystar University comprising the DVC ARSA, Prof. Samuel Muriithi, DVC FAP, Prof. Muturi Wachira, the University Chaplain Rev. Miano Weche, the Director, School of Mission and Theology, Prof. Bernard Boyo, the Dean School of Education Prof. Dr. Dr. Moni Wekesa, former Dean School of Communication Prof. Levi Obonyo, Faculty, staff, students and alumni to bid farewell to former Ag. Vice Chancellor, Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo. Also present were former Daystar University staff.

Prof. Kombo was laid to rest at his Kogelo home, in Siaya, in a ceremony that was attended by hundreds of people from all walks of life.  These included Church leaders, institutions he worked with, family, friends and relatives.

Among key institutions present were St. Paul’s University led by the Vice Chancellor, Africa International University and Uganda Christian University where Prof. Kombo was an external examiner. Also present were Prof. Kombo’s friends and alumni of Scott University with whom he completed his undergraduate studies, among them Prof. Bernard Boyo.

Everyone who stood eulogized the good Professor as a devout servant of God with great humility, God fearing, , dedicated to his work, and a humane person who loved people and showed no partiality.

Speaking at the burial ceremony, Daystar University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laban Ayiro said Prof. Kombo was a genuine person of great humility and a man who valued fellow human beings. In honour of Prof. Kombo’s dedicated service to Daystar University, the VC promised to employ one his children.

Echoing the Vice Chancellor, the DVC ARSA, Prof. Samuel Muriithi praised Prof. Kombo as a person of great humility and a people loving person, a mentor and friend.

Also speaking at the burial was Prof. Kombo’s former Personal Assistant, Dr. Joab Namai, who said Prof. Kombo was not just his boss but a great friend, with whom he shared a lot.

Prof. Kombo’s wife, Pamela, reminisced about their deep love for each other; how they did everything together, and went everywhere together as a couple. The children also spoke about how much their father deeply loved their mother.

“My father was a peaceful giant, humble, loving, wise and deeply devoted to family, He loved my mother wholeheartedly and together they showed us what unity, respect and true partnership looks like, said Leonida Claire, Prof. Kombo’s first-born daughter.

His first son Phillip promised to carry on the Kombo legacy and emulate his father’s character.

The family sang the hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness,’ as a testimony of God’ faithfulness in their family, and a prayer that God would continue to be faithful to the family even after the departure of their father.
