Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science

Biomedical science is a field of medical science dedicated to the study of the human body in health and disease with the ultimate goal of advancement of human medicine through research. It is a very ‘real-world’ discipline that has produced Biomedical research scientists who have made global and national headlines with advances in their fields, with results that you can see first-hand such as growing embryos for IVF to answer the challenges of infertility, 3D-printing of a heart to alleviate cardiovascular disorders or developing a new medicine to fight cancer and HIV/AIDS and vaccine development to combat Corona virus pandemic. Discovery of new drugs and therapies requires careful scientific ethics, experimentation, development, and evaluation and this is a major part of our program training.

Requirements

A mean grade of C+ (plus) and above in KCSE, or 5 credits in IGCSE with 2 credits passes in A level or division 2 in GCE.

Course description

Biomedical Science program generally focuses on the normal functioning of cells, organs and systems thus giving the learner a clear understanding when assessing abnormalities. During the student’s study at Daystar University they will have the opportunity to perform full cadaveric dissection in collaboration with renowned Research and Health institutions nationally hence providing them with an excellent foundation for the understanding of human anatomy and developmental biology. This program also explores other areas of biology that influence human health such as Laboratory animal science, Epidemiology & disease control, Entomology, Toxicology, Ethics, Biostatistics, Pharmacology and Genetics.

Because Biomedical Science is a research based program the students have the opportunity to develop research proposals and carry-out research projects in partner institutions with their final work amounting to publishable work. The program is designed in such a way to allow the student ample time to develop their skills and expertise by having a full semester each year to be attached at the leading Research and Health Institutions in Kenya.

This not only facilitates development of skills but builds up the much needed work experience which makes our graduates attractive to employers. This program is constantly reviewed to ensure to reflect the most current technological advancements in medical research.
